New Mexico United unveils U23 squad for 2020

The new team joins the USL League 2 Mountain Division

After a flurry of announcements from the club in the past few days, quite possibly the biggest one of all dropped today. Earlier this afternoon, New Mexico United and USL League 2 announced that the club was expanding their reach and would be part of the developmental league within the USL hierarchy.

“This team will be an essential addition to our club model, as we look to bridge the gap between our High-Performance Youth Program and first team,” said New Mexico United Head Coach Troy Lesesne. “League Two will also serve as a platform to enhance our scouting, as we will bring in top players that we’ve identified who fit our culture, style of play, and system of play.”

Rumored to be a possibility last season, and now confirmed by the announcement, United has taken yet another step in expanding its footprint in the soccer landscape. The new club will allow both collegiate and academy-age players to get first-hand experience in a professional environment.

More information will be forthcoming about the U23 squad. Right now there is no word on schedule, venue or technical staff. It is unknown at this time, what this means for Albuquerque Sol, the current League 2 team in Albuquerque.

USL League 2 was founded in 1995 and was formerly known as the Premier Development League. The league is currently home to 72 different clubs around the nation and is a participant in the U.S. Open Cup.
